Music and Social Justice

A Middle School class on the intersection of music and social justice integrates the study of history, popular music, and song form, learning about the music that can go places where mere words can not.  Students explore and reflect on music relating to issues of racial inequality, poverty, war and other issues. A study of song structure and persuasive writing leads to a unit in original songwriting.

This Music is Your Music

Students study the historical and cultural impact of protest music.

Sing A Song

Students explore developing their own song, reflecting their own cultural context and understanding.
